Complete Angel Lorde Sewed A Jenny Holzer Poem To Her Grammys Dress

“Only dire circumstances can precipitate the overthrow of oppressors.”

In annoying but predictable news, Lorde was nominated for Album of the Year at this year’s Grammys but was the only nominee from the category not invited to perform solo (though all of the other nominees, who were male, were). With this, news came that she’d be boycotting the event.

In typical Lorde spirit, she came up with a more powerful move than boycotting (and perpetuating female invisibility). So, she did attend, with a Jenny Holzer poem stitched onto her dress.

“My version of a white rose,” she captioned a photo of the handy work on insta โ€” a zoom shot of the excerpt from Holzer’s 1977 ‘Inflammatory Essays’.

“Rejoice! Our times are intolerable. Take courage, for the worst is a harbinger of the best. Only dire circumstances can precipitate the overthrow of oppressors. The old and corrupt must be laid to waste before the just can triumph. Contradiction will be heightened. The reckoning will be hastened by the staging of seed disturbances. The apocalypse will blossom.”
