ACP Presents Russia's Best Photographers
Connecting a strong cultural history with an expanding future.
Most fairy tales have a moral. Red Riding Hood isn't just about a silly hooded girl who can't tell the difference between a wolf and her grandmother – it's a story of restoration and making things right. You may remember that the wolf receive penance for his bad behaviour, and grandma emerges unscathed from the wolf's belly after he gobbles her up. The same goes for Russian fairytales. Valuable advice is always given at crossroads: the "state of choice; a place of empowerment at the point where aspirations and hopes, dreams and memories converge."
This concept is the basis for the Australian Centre for Photography's next exhibition. In Crossroads, Irina Tchmyreva presents the work of five top Russian artists that demonstrates contrasting directions in Russian photography. Artists work from very different traditions to show how immensely varied Russian art is, as well as where it sits between a strong cultural history and the country's expanding future.
Crossroads is a free exhibition and will run from 18 March - 30 April.
