Balenciaga Resort 2013 Lookbook
Just wow!
Creative Director Nicholas Gesquiére drew from the Balenciaga archives for Resort 2013, taking inspiration from a collection of ballet costumes made by Christobel Balenciaga in the 1930s.
Resort is all modern femininity. Think fluid, draping fabrics, offset cleverly with pinstripe high-waisted trousers and fitted leather bodices. The palette is a nostalgic throw-back to those childhood ballet recitals we made our parents sit through — blush, baby blues, and pale lemon appear alongside strictly-business neutrals, navy and khaki.
The icing on the cake, though, are the floor-length gowns, which feel like fresh territory for Balenciaga. There's one (modeled by Julia Nobis, above), where the fluid fabric falls perfectly but is made tough with a warrior-like bustier. In eggshell white, another clings to the form like a second skin, with art-nouveau cutouts bringing the piece back to earth.
