Devendra Banhart Designs A T-shirt

The pysch-folk polyglot collaborates with COMUNE.

Devendra Banhart made his foray into the world of fashion with a video for eyewear company Oliver Peoples. On set for the steamy short Banhart and his girlfriend Rebecca Schwartz were instructed to "Get in the bathtub!" and "Be together!". The film was meant to pay homage to French New Wave classics like Godard's Une Femme Mariee, with the director determined to cast a real-life couple with genuine chemistry. Banhart and Schwartz fit the bill perfectly - the pair seemingly can't keep their hands off each other as they make out on balconies, staircases and shag carpets in Rainbow House, the Los Angeles mansion designed by architect John Launtner in the sixties.

Banhart's latest fashion-related venture (unfortunately) involves a lot less naked torso and a lot more shirt. In fact, it involves Banhart designing a shirt. The pscyh-folk polyglot collaborated with COMUNE to create a limited edition tee. They started with one of Banhart's drawings and zoomed in on it until they got a trippy, geometric print. Inspired by alchemist H. Pee and late cubism, the shirt is perfectly matched to Banhart's music. It will be available in early August from stores like American Rag and Nordstrom.
