Dyspnea's 'Paralysis' SS14/15
It's the medical term for 'shortness of breath' or 'air hunger' but lately, it's been associated with a local label who just revealed their SS14/15 'Paralysis' in the New Gen show at MBFWA. It's Dyspnea! Made up of three designers, Jameen Zalfen, Aimee-Cherie Kendall and Rachel Motteram, the label's big on crystal embellishments, pastel colours, sheer fabrications and fluffy bits. We took a look at their SS14/15 campaign polaroids and had a quick talk with Jameen.
Jerico Mandybur: What was showing in MBFWA's New Generation collection last week like?
Jameen Zalfen: It was the wildest adrenaline rush, we had a freaking amazing time running on no sleep and the media hype surrounding us. The reviews and positive feedback have been overwhelming.
Why is your label called Dyspnea?
We liked the word, its slightly alien to society and the meaning reflects our aesthetic - gasping for breath, hungry for air.
If you could describe your label in five words, what would they be?
Crazy, provocative, coma-inducing, psychedelic and magical.
If this collection was a song, what would it be?
Britney spears - 'Toxic'
How did you all meet and what's it like having three designers working together on a label?
We all met at TAFE. It's challenging as there are so many opinions being thrown around but at the end of the day we all lean on and support one another — we're a team. We challenge each other to better the label.
If your label had a mission statement, what would it be?
Act crazy, be provocative.
Who's the Dyspnea girl?
The tinkerbell of this generation. She loves to dress up and get cray.
What's next for you guys?
The stars are the limit, we want New York Fashion Week bitchaz!
