Elle Fanning, Rebel Wilson, Jennifer Lawrence & More Shot by Tierney Gearon for The New York Times

Tierney Gearon's Hollywood Heroines.

LA-based photographer and Oyster contributor Tierney Gearon is the genius behind the latest The New York Times Hollywood Heroines mini film portfolio, which features 13 of the most outstanding actresses from 2012. Tierney directed the 13 shorts with female heroines in mind and granted each woman a surreal supersuper power of sorts: there's a snake charmer, a rainmaker, a transformer, a mermaid...

No special effects were used, insists New York Times writer Dean Robinson, but rather Tierney employed her usual visual trickery — glass cubes, bubbles and wind machines  — to create the dream-like sequences. Naomi Watts, Shirley MacLaine, Anne Hathaway, Kiera Knightly, Marion Cotillard, Amy Adams, and Jennifer Lawrence are some of the stars. Although Tierney's playfulness (see Rebel Wilson's transformation into a mermaid) and love for colour is ever-present, some of the films are quite haunting. This has got to be some of her best work to date. See our favourites in the gallery above, and the full series at The New York Times.
