Exclusive: Friend of Mine SS12/13 Behind-The-Scenes & Interview
Sneak peek the new lookbook shot by Bec Parsons and styled by Imogene Barron, starring Nicole Pollard.
We went behind-the-scenes on Friend of Mine's SS12/13 lookbook shoot. The lookbook stars Fashion Week favourite Nicole Pollard, styled by Imogene Barron and shot by Bec Parsons. The new collection is an undeniably cool combination of the label's signature raw cuts, harnesses contrasted with sheer fabrics, and feminine silhouettes. We caught up with the designers Teal Talbot and Letitia McLean about how SS12/13 came into being.
Alanna Bromley: What is this collection all about?
Teal Talbot and Letitia McLean: The collection is designed for strong, chic, and unapologetic women. We've been inspired a lot by Helmut Newton’s photography recently, so the muses this season are all taken from the woman in his photographs. The design aesthetic is a lot about sharp, clean lines, and it’s a blend of textured staples with Friend of Mine's signature obscure hemlines.
How do you know you've completed a piece? Does it ever come down to question of 'would I wear this?’
Yes, the wearability and personal style is a huge factor; we can’t sell clothing that we would not wear ourselves, and the fit of a garment is a priority to us.
What would you say has been your biggest accomplishment over the last twelve months?
The biggest accomplishment would be our first RAFW show in Sydney last year and the expansion of our online store. Another highlight is when Erin Wasson bought two pairs of our shoes from the online store.
If this collection were to be used as the costumes for a film or play, what would it be?
Basic Instinct.
Why did you decide to use this particular model and photographer for the look book this season?
We used Nicole for her polished look, Amazonian stature, and feline eyes. Imogene a terrific stylis; we have wanted to work on a project with her for a while, so the timing was brilliant. The photographer Bec is so talented, and she has the highest level of professionalism. Her and Imogene work together constantly so it was a terrific team.
What is the most unusual source of inspiration you've ever had?
A loin cloth!
Name one thing on your bucket list...
To travel to Africa.
