Guest Playlist: Youth Lagoon

...and win tickets to his Sydney and Melbourne Splendour sideshows!

Trevor Powers, aka Youth Lagoon, is something of a marvel. At only 22 years of age, the San Diego multi-instrumentalist has managed to carve out a style that's all his own, combining the sensibility of lo-fi legend Sparklehorse with cerebral synths, infectious claps and ethereal vocals. His debut album, The Year Of Hibernation — a dream pop delight — made it in onto Pitchfork's Top 50 albums of 2011, setting him among contemporary greats like Deerhunter, Sigur Rós, and Animal Collective.

Youth Lagoon sold out his last Australian tour earlier this year and is returning for Splendour In The Grass later this month. He made us a playlist that pays homage to our All Woman issue (out now!) by giving us his top seven songs by female artists, as well as a little bit about why he has included them:

1. 'Ends' – Noveller

Such an entrancing, hypnotic track. Some songs have the ability to create an unexplored environment for the listener, and this is one of those.

2. 'Magnetism' – Motion Sickness of Time Travel
Rachel Evans is a songwriter who builds her music brick by brick, layer by layer.

3. 'Ice Water' – Cat Power
Sometimes, the more minimal the better. Chan Marshall doesn't dress anything up when she doesn't need to.

4. 'Little Acorns' – Leila
Unpredictability at its finest.

5. 'Edge Of Seventeen' – Stevie Nicks
Had to...

6. 'Moses' – Elizabeth Fraser
This is one of my favorite tracks. Such amazing production and really sonically challenging but keeps to a very basic core.

7. 'Undertow' – Warpaint
So much good in this song.

As well as playing Splendour, Youth Lagoon will do sideshows in Sydney (on Saturday July 28 at The Factory Theatre) and Melbourne (on Sunday July 29 at The Corner Hotel). Now for the exciting bit... we've got a double pass to each show to give away!

The competition is open to Australian residents and will run until midnight AEST on Tuesday July 17, 2012. The Melbourne winner (and their plus one) must be over 18 due to venue requirements, however the Sydney show is all ages.
