Happy 50th Birthday Havaianas!

What would we wear in summer if these rubbery guys didn't exist?
Havaianas x Missoni

Brazilian shoe brand Havaianas have turned 50. To celebrate this momentus anniversary, they've created a video which is both a) cute, and b) informative. Did you know that the flip flops were originally made with colour straps on a white base, but then their fans started turning up the sole, so that they were more colourful? Ingenious! No wonder they now exist in a rainbow of colours and collaborations — our favourite being their take on Missoni, which you can see above, conveniently ready for the beach on a Missoni towel. Now entertain your inner-child by watching the animation, and let your inner-bogan ponder over their use of the word "sandals" instead of "thongs" (or "jandals" if you're from New Zealand).

The label has also designed a commemorative edition of the original 60s blue and white model, with a little '1962' pin on it. 50,000 have been produced and in an act of major generosity, the company's giving 100% of the profits to the UNICEF Seal project which aims to improve kids and teens lives in underprivileged areas of Brazil. You can buy the special edition flip flops for $35 exclusively through Havaianas Australia.
