Kurt Cobain would have turned 45 today.
Today marks what would have been Kurt Cobain's 45th birthday. Lead singer of Nirvana and figurehead of the grunge scene, Cobain married Hole's Courtney Love in 1992, their daughter Frances Bean born later that year. In the last few years of his life, Cobain struggled with being in the public eye after Nirvana propelled to unexpected levels of crazy-fame after the release of Nevermind in 1991. While of course most notable for his role in Nirvana, one of Cobain's early bands, Fecal Matter, is much lesser-known. Formed in his hometown of Aberdeen, Washington, Fecal Matter included members of the Melvins and only ever recorded one unreleased demo, Illiteracy Will Prevail:
Suffering from depression and nursing a heroin addiction, Cobain was infamously found dead on April 8, 1994, apparently having shot himself. Dying at age 27, he joins Jim Morrison, Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix in the list of great but troubled musicians to have passed away at that fateful age. We look back at images of the late musician:
