Interview #103 Interview: Maison Martin Margiela x Converse

Reinventing two of Converse's classic sneaker styles!

The colour white signifies all things good in the world, like innocence, purity, and lightness (not to mention dairy products!). Since 1988, the legendary fashion house Maison Martin Margiela has used white as a symbol for anonymity, its founder Martin Margiela eschewing the fame that could have come with launching one of the most exciting avant-garde labels of the nineties in favour of letting the clothes and (in the case of interviews) the MMM collective speak for themselves. Now they've teamed up with cult label Converse to reinvent everybody's beloved go-to sneakers. The neat part? Every pair starts out the same, but ends up different. Intrigued? Read on.

Zac Bayly: In what ways do Maison Martin Margiela and Converse’s ideas align?
Maison Martin Margiela: Both brands are known for their individuality, self-expression and desire to unleash creativity. That is something the collection embodies perfectly.

What’s the idea behind the white paint on the sneakers?
The sneakers are all hand-painted in Maison Martin Margiela’s iconic white paint, completely covering the canvas uppers, eyelets, laces and soles. Just as the white paint will slowly crack away to reveal the original colour and thus the hidden inner personality of the shoe, so will the wearer reveal theirs.

Why is white so significant to MMM?
Fans and followers of Maison Martin Margiela will instantly recognise the signature white paint. The Maison believes that such a colour enables the finished product to take centre stage and stand out even more strongly.

What was the most stimulating part of the collaborative process?
Collaborating with another company is a unique and highly enriching experience as it allows you to delve deep into the inner workings of another prestigious brand, thus discovering far more about their creative identity than you may have known otherwise. The beauty in bringing two visions and universes together is often unparalleled in terms of creative freedom, highlighting the best of both worlds.
