Karen O Covers Willie Nelson
And opens her "psycho opera" in which she corrupts virgins.
Yeah Yeah Yeahs front woman Karen O covers 'Mammas Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up to be Cowboys' by Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings. Her version of the song was commissioned as the soundtrack for Abandoned, a short film by The Chipotle Cultivate Foundation aiming to raise awareness about the tough economic times faced by American farming families in an industry which is increasingly industrialized. Hence the children playing in the abandoned farm house. As well as backing a good cause, O's cover of the cowboy classic is very easy on the ear and she lends herself to the blues well. Check it out below.
O has also been busy with her 'psycho opera', Stop The Virgens, which premiered last week in Brooklyn. In a statement for the stage production, O said, "I'm hoping to create an original live experience, it should feel like a psychedelic ride laced with catharsis... It's aiming to have all the good stuff of escapist entertainment with a few sucker punches to the gut along the way." An 11 piece band is lead by Yeah Yeah Yeahs guitarist Nick Zinner who co-wrote the score with O, featuring Yeah Yeah Yeahs drummer Brian Chase, Patrick Keeler and Jack Lawrence from the Raconteurs, and the Beastie Boys' Money Mark on keys. Christian Joy, who is responsible for O's insanely amazing stage wear, designed the costumes for the play which follows the plot of O corrupting the innocence of a cast of well-clad virgins. Have a look at the behind-the-scenes video below.
Karen O also appears as a guest vocalist on David Lynch's debut album, Crazy Clown Time, which will be out on November 7. Stay tuned!
