London Fashion Week Interview: House of Holland
We ask Henry to liken his collection to frozen yogurt toppings, and he tells us he's a mummy's boy.
Concentrating enough to write anything vaguely technical or at least adequately descriptive about House of Holland’s SS13 'Buzz Kill' collection is proving impossible, because it’s almost midnight in London and my neighbors are blaring ‘Roxanne’, ‘White Wedding’ and ‘Go Your Own Way’ and singing along to them at the top of their lungs. Also, I am too. So, here are a few key points from the collection: there were metallics, floral jacquard, overblown-check prints, leather and embellished tie-dye silk, and it was inspired by the 90s. I interviewed Henry Holland shortly after the show.
Zac Bayly: How would you sum up your collection in three words beginning with vowels?
Henry Holland: Attitude. Obnoxious. Excellent.
I did not think you’d be able to do that so quickly!
[He laughs and we high-five]
If you could save just one person in the front row tonight from a fire, who would it be?
My mum. I think it would be mean if I picked anyone else.

Who was the last person you telephoned in the 90s?
What, just before the millennium? Oh my god — amazing! That’s a really good question! It was my mum, because she was in France and —
Are you a mummy’s boy?
Yes! [He laughs] I’m pretty sure that’s obvious by now.
Do you speak to her everyday?
Most. My boyfriend thinks it’s weird.
Which piece in the collection do you dislike most?
Hmmm… Nothing. I liked my collection!
So did I, but the question remains…
Well, one of the hats was tightened a little too much, so it had a funny shape at the back. That’s all you're getting. [Laughs]
How many hours sleep did you get last night?
Four. I was home at two, and back in the office by eight.
What song was on repeat during deadline?
We had the radio on with absolute 90s, and all the tunes in the show. We always play the tunes that will be used in the show.
One of the prominent colours in the collection was gunmetal. Are you angry at anyone?
No!
Who is the last person you were angry with?
It is someone in my office — Danielle.
What did Danielle do?
She emailed me this morning asking for time off for a holiday. [Laughs] But you know what else she did? Prior to this, she emailed me a month ago and asked for the dates of the 11th to the 14th of September off. I went, “Do you realise our show’s on the 15th?” Just even talking about it is really boiling my blood!
Last question: if your collection were a frozen yoghurt with three toppings, what would it be?
Vanilla yoghurt with black cherries, that candy that fizzes in your mouth, and blueberries.
