Maison Martin Margiela Wants You To Get Tattoos

And host a crafternoon.

Ahh Maison Martin Margiela, with your breathtaking Couture SS14 show. The collection was not only a showcase of craftsmanship and inventiveness but it was something of a love letter to vintage. Old-world fabrics were sourced from estates and included Frank Lloyd Wright-designed textiles from the 50s and replicated motifs like Paul Gauguin's 'La femme du roi.' Textiles connoisseur Iris Apfel would have had a field day. But the stand-out statements were obvs those Margiela masks (which we can no longer dissociate from Kanye West) and the embroidered tattoos.

Stuck together and fashioned into haute tank tops, the tattoos also ran down the arms of models — a fine, albeit pricey, substitute for the real thing. And unlike the real thing, these don't fade and you can remove them anytime. Like Chanel's temporary tattoos before them and collections from Henry Holland, Rodarte and Jean Paul Gaultier which have all been inspired by tattoo art — Margiela are repping body modification this season and it's making us want to slap an American eagle and a rose that says 'Mum' on our arm. It's also giving us the urge to host a crafternoon of some kind. BYO stockings and be-dazzler. Paper clips and buttons will be supplied.
