New York Diary: Cy Twombly at Gagosian Gallery Opening

Our NY contributor Gillian Sagansky made it out of Hurricane Sandy in one piece to attend this art opening.
Gallery owner/art dealer Larry Gagosian

Downtown Manhattanites ventured uptown on Thursday night to attend the opening of Gagosian Gallery's 'The Last Paintings' tribute to the recently deceased artist Cy Twombly. The gallery is featuring two distinct bodies of work — the final suite of paintings the artist completed before his death in 2011 as well as photographs ranging from the 1950s to 2011 which were, without a doubt, the highlight of the show. In these delicate, wistful, and eerie photographs, seemingly banal objects are transformed into enigmatic subjects charged with meaning. The tribute show is on view until 22 December at 980 Madison Avenue, New York.
