Tom Ford directorial debut picks up two BAFTA nominations

Tom Ford’s highly anticipated feature length film, ‘A Single Man,’ has recently been nominated for two BAFTA awards, including Best Actor (Colin Firth), and Best Costume Design.

The film is the directorial debut for Ford, who is also credited with resurrecting Gucci in the 1990s, and more recently, directing his own fashion label. ‘A Single Man’ is adapted from the novel by Christopher Isherwood, and recounts the daily life of an English professor after the sudden death of his partner. The film opens in Australian cinemas on the 25th February, and is already being lauded by critics and fans alike as a visual masterpiece.

Ashley Olsen over acting

The Olsen twins have been on the screen since nine months of age, now Ashley reveals her plans to focus on fashion in an interview with VMAN.

While Mary-Kate has pursued her acting career, Ashley’s has been more subdued. “I turned 18, I moved to New York, and I haven't really done anything since to be a celebrity,” she told the men’s magazine.

After completing an internship with Zac Posen, the twins established their fashion label The Row in 2006. Starting off as a high-end t-shirt label, The Row branched into a fully-fledged womenswear line and was met with acclaim.

“I’ve been transitioning from acting as a kid to doing something that I’m choosing for myself - to be part of the fashion industry,” says Ashley.

The Row, under Ashley’s watch, is to launch its first menswear line this year, which she describes as “extremely masculine… It’s for that 30-, 40-, 50-year-old who has a refined sense of self, but needs those basics and doesn't want to wear Tom Ford.”

Tom Ford on the big screen

With a hugely successful fashion empire under his belt, Tom Ford is now trying his luck on the big screen. The former Gucci designer bought the rights to Christopher Isherwood's 1964 novel, A Single Man, and has been in the director's chair since last November.

The film will feature Colin Firth, Julianne Moore and Billy Elliot star, Jamie Bell. Firth plays gay college professor George, who struggles to come to terms with his lover's death, played by Bell.

This is Ford's directorial debut and the film is set to be released later this year.
