Oyster #98: Stevie Nicks' All-Time Favourite Songs
From classics (MJ) to modern-day pop (Katy Perry!).
Stevie Nicks is a legend of song and style. As Fleetwood Mac's frontwoman, she wrote some of their greatest hits including 'Dreams', 'Rhiannon' and 'Gypsy', while in the realm of fashion she championed boho gypsy goddess steeze. For our Music Issue, we asked her about her all-time favourite songs.
'Rock and Roll Woman' (1967)
— Buffalo Springfield
From the first time I heard it, that's who I wanted to be. And that was before I was even in a band.
'Man in the Mirror' (1988) — Michael Jackson
It's a song about not complaining about how things are, [and instead] making a statement about how things could be.
'This Woman's Work' (2001)
It is rare for a man to be able to sing a woman's song with that much sensitivity — it actually compares to the original version by Kate Bush. Also, Maxwell's version came out when I was going through a trying time with a dear friend who was sick and eventually died. It helped me through that time in my life.
'ET' (2011) — Katy Perry
It's really just a re-telling of the story of Beauty and the Beast. Another amazing song of the fairytale done very well; a modern version.
'Fix You' (2006) — Coldplay
As songwriters, we always hope we might be the person that can say something that can fix someone who is sad; that the words we have written can reach down and pick you up. Sometimes nothing but music can do that.
