When I met Femke that morning in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, she came right up to me and introduced herself with a very firm handshake and upright posture. I could sense immediately that she had a strong, confident personality which was exactly how I wanted the girl in the story to be. I wanted her to be young and fearless yet wise and sophisticated.
I tend to like when there is some sort of contrast in a picture that makes the beautiful not too beautiful, and in this case the location added something interesting to the girl and the fashion. I can't get enough of industrial areas likes this and in Brooklyn they are everywhere so that's my favorite place to be — maybe it's because we have a lack of them where I grew up in Sweden.
The make-up artist Linda Gradin, who is also Swedish, recently moved to New York and joined a great agency and through them teamed up with Owen Gould who did the hair on this shoot. I love both of them. It took a while for me to convince them into doing what we were doing; they were stubborn like an old couple. It's really a privilege to work with talented hair and make-up artists, it puts so much into the picture.
The stylist on this shoot — Esther Matilla — and I have really similar taste. After assisting for many years in New York she's starting to work more on her own. We met just recently but somehow it feels like we can read each others minds when we work. Some people you just like instantly and to me she's definitely a keeper, and a very talented one.
