Oyster Playlist: High Highs
To celebrate the release of their debut album (out today!) and upcoming Laneway tour.
Today High Highs released their debut album Open Season. It's a dreamy, slightly melancholy record, where vocalist Jack Milas shows off his falsetto which is laid down over soft synths, stripped-back acoustics and chilled electronic care of the other half of the duo, Oli Chang.
Originally hailing from Sydney and now based in Brooklyn, the boys are coming back to Australia to play Laneway and two headline shows (see dates below). To celebrate the upcoming tour and album release, the band members put together this YouTube playlist for us.
1. 'Break My Stride' — Matthew Wilder
Solid gold hit. I can't not dance when I hear it. I think the chorus chords are really beautiful.
2. 'Feel Something' — Holy Other
This song is already really beautiful, and someone paired it with footage of jets flying above the clouds. It's an unofficial video but it's totally breathtaking. Apparently the footage is from a french film.
3. 'Inspector Norse' — Todd Terje
I think Oli and I agree it's one of the best videos of 2012, and potentially the song of 2012.
4. 'Powderfinger' — Neil Young & Crazy Horse
There's plenty of videos online of this song live, but it's nice to see him so young, singing such a powerful song. It's an awesome song but I always find the backup vocals so haunting.
5. 'Visuals' (excerpt) — Jon Hopkins
Lovely colours and a great stream-of consciousness animation by Vince Collins.
6. 'Look' — Sébastien Tellier
I don't know why I love this clip. I actually love the song.
7. 'Feels Like We Only Go Backwards' — Tame Impala
Beautiful animation and an epic song.
8. 'Be Good Or Be Gone' — Fionn Regan
I like this for nerdy reasons — it's interesting to hear the different environments.
