Oyster Playlist: Step-Panther
To celebrate the launch of their 'Dreamcrusher' EP.
Step-Panther are a great Sydney-based band whose music might take you back to your formative years of smoking bongs with ten of your best friends in your parents' garage. Their Dreamcrusher EP was released last Friday and expertly captures adolescent apathy and a life sux mentality but in a way that's more Pavement than pop-punk. "I don't wanna be here, I just wanna get some nachos," drawls lead vocalist Steve in forever-bummed anthem 'Bad Mood'. Genius!
Before Step-Panther launch Dreamcrusher next month with live shows in Sydney and Melbourne (dates below), we asked the band to make us a YouTube playlist and tell us a bit about each song that they included. What resulted is this terrific mix which covers everything from Metallica to M.I.A.
'Haters Wanna Be Me' — Krispy Kreme
I think he recently changed his name to Froggy Fresh because of copyright issues. This is the first Krispy Kreme video I saw. My four favourite things in this video are the part where he is in a tree, Money Maker Mike, the part where he screams, and the shout-out to 2Pac at the end.
'Cursed Sleep' — Bonnie 'Prince' Billy
This one breaks my heart every time, it really goes to another level once the brother puts on the E.T. mask.
'Can't Tell Me Nothing' — Kanye West (featuring Zach Galifianakis)
Anything with one person dumping another person into a swamp with a tractor is funny to me.
'You Could Be Mine' — Guns N' Roses
For some reason I like videos that have bits of a movie all through them. In this one you get to see all the cool parts of Terminator II, plus Guns N' Roses playing to a sold out crowd, plus a sub-plot where the Terminator is trying to kill the band. What more do you want?
'Baby's On Fire' — Die Antwoord
I love all the Die Antwoord videos, this is my favourite because of the donuts and the weapons.
'Extinction' — The Soft Pack
This is a really cool song. The video is man versus trees inside and outside. Trees win.
'Rubber' — Yuck
This is a long song, and it shreds. It's the final track on their album and it's definitely a sweet closer! Plus the video has dogs and boobs.
'One' — Metallica
I first saw this video as a small child and it blew my mind. Still one of my favourite clips of all time. Weirdly it was the first music video Metallica ever bothered making.
'Rock Bottom' — King Krule
My favourite song of 2012. Super-talented young ginger kid from England who looks like a mate of mine. I find that funny.
'1979' — Smashing Pumpkins
The most fun film clip ever. I want to party with this video and wake up next to it in the morning, then do it again.
'About You' — XXYYXX
Cool babes smoking weed in slow motion. Thank you Internet.
This song makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside, which goes hand-in-hand with a guy skating around in a condom suit.
I was travelling with my mate in New York in 2010. We went to a random secret gig and it ended up being these two boys from Brisbane playing. I still watch this clip before going out to put me in a party mood.
It feels like we only go backwards.
