Oyster Travel: 'Long White Cloud' Shot by Ryan Kenny & Styled by Zara Mirkin in NZ

We profile the Kiwi models who captured our hearts.

For our first biannual issue photographer Ryan Kenny and NZ stylist Zara Mirkin went on a tour of her home country to profile some of the Kiwis who have captured their hearts.

Ever since I left New Zealand, not a day goes past that I don't dream about my time there: the rural upbringing, the indescribable landscapes, and the down-to-earth people I met along the way. Every summer I return home and wonder why I ever left, but at the same time I know that I can come and go and nothing will change in this peaceful place. Over the years I have really enjoyed getting to know the models I've worked with. They have become muses to me and my work, as well as close friends. We all have one thing in common: we are Kiwis.

Where is your peaceful place? A place right on the water's edge at a beautiful black-sand beach called Paritutu Rock. It's about a 20-minute climb to the top and once you get there there's a breathtaking view of the mountain, the West Coast and the whole of New Plymouth city.
What do you remember most about growing up in NZ? Climbing trees, falling off surfboards, taking my goat to school, trampolines, eating feijoas on the side of the road then throwing them at cars, head-high grass.
Bob Marley or John Lennon? John Lennon.
Fish 'n' chips or hāngi [traditional Māori way of cooking]? Fish 'n' chips.

Derya Ella Parlak
Age: 20
Home town: Auckland
Where is your peaceful place? The shower.
Where is your favourite place in NZ? Te Ngaere Bay, a picturesque beach situated halfway between the Whangarei Harbour and Matauri Bay. It has caves, grassy knolls, Pohutukawas, hidden spots; it is nearly perfect in every way. I feel wrapped up by the cove, comforted by warmth of the sun and cleansed by its cool waters.
Bob Marley or John Lennon? Both, but for very different reasons.
Fish 'n' chips or hāngi? Hāngi. It's in the ground.

Seon
Age: 18
Home town: Seoul, South Korea
Where is your peaceful place? Takapuna Beach in the North Shore.
Where is your favourite place in NZ? Same as my peaceful place! Takapuna Beach. I've lived in the Shore for over ten years and I have so many good memories from when I was a young girl at the beach.
Bob Marley or John Lennon? Definitely John Lennon.
Fish 'n' chips or hāngi? Fish 'n' chips!

Snez
Age: 23
Home town: Užice, Serbia
Where is your peaceful place? At home, alone, listening to music or daydreaming.
Where is your favourite place in NZ? I love Wellington, I've loved it ever since the first time I visited. It's far enough from home to feel like something different but close enough that it's convenient.
What is your idea of peace? Being comfortable with yourself and not interfering with other people's happiness.
Bob Marley or John Lennon? Neither in particular.
Fish 'n' chips or hāngi? Haven't tried hāngi yet, so fish 'n' chips.

Rusty
Age: 19
Home town: Auckland
Where is your peaceful place? Bethells Lake.
What do you remember most about growing up in NZ? The best thing about growing up in New Zealand is probably the warm weather and the hot beaches and just the West Auckland lifestyle — BBQs and hāngis and hanging out with your cousins and family.
Bob Marley or John Lennon? John Lennon.
Fish 'n' chips or hāngi? Hāngi.

Lili Sumner
Age: 18
Home town: Auckland
Where is your peaceful place? A trampoline in an orchard on Taihape Road in Hawke's Bay — the best place to read a book. My bed in Grey Lynn is pretty good though.
What do you remember most about growing up in NZ? Riding horses bareback, swimming in rivers… and then later sneaking into lots of gigs with my friends.
Bob Marley or John Lennon? John Lennon, but I love reggae.
Fish 'n' chips or hāngi? Chish 'n' fips!

Sasha Frantz
Age: 23
Home town: Auckland
Where is your peaceful place? On the couch.
Where is your favourite place in NZ? My aunty's in Maraetai Beach on the East Coast is pretty lush; it's surrounded by bush and you feel totally secluded.
What is your idea of peace? Being in good company with family and friends.
Most memorable NZ road trip? Driving to Gisborne was amazing — through the gorges and swimming in fresh water.
Bob Marley or John Lennon? John Lennon for me.
Fish 'n' chips or hāngi? Fish 'n' chips.

Ella Verberne
Age: 17
Home town: Auckland
Where is your peaceful place? Somewhere away from the hustle and bustle of town, near the sea with family. I absolutely love New Zealand as it is less crowded than the rest of the world and we have the most beautiful scenery and nature.
What is your idea of peace? "'You have peace,' the old woman said, 'when you make it with yourself.'" I think that this quote by Mitch Albom perfectly fits my vision of peace, as you have to forgive and accept yourself for who you are and who you are not before you can be at peace with everyone else.
Bob Marley or John Lennon? John Lennon.
Fish 'n' chips or hāngi? Fish 'n' chips.

Stay tuned for part two of 'Long White Cloud' as well as a video!
