Reality Bites the TV Show

"Hello, you've reached the winter of our discontent."

Zeitgeist-summarising, kind-of-rom-com of the 90s, Reality Bites, is being made into a weekly half-hour TV series for NBC. Seriously. According to VarietyBen Stiller will be the show's Executive Producer, while the movie's original screenwriter, Helen Childress, has signed on to write the pilot script.

Rather than going the lame 'where are they now?', modern-day route, the show will stay set in the 90s, following whiney wannabe-documentarian Leliana Pierce (Winona) as she and her friends "struggle to make their way romantically and professionally in the recession-plagued, pre-Internet early 1990s in Houston, where she shares an apartment with her slacker friends." Wow, that sounds just like the show that Ben Stiller's character makes in the movie, based on Leilana's life and friends, which is like, really bad.

We can't imagine the original cast of Winona Ryder, Ethan Hawke, Janeane Garofalo and Ben Stiller will be appearing in the new show, nor will anyone who related to their characters be watching it. But hey, that doesn't mean that it's going to be bad. It just means that the majority of the original films' Gen X fans will be yelling at the TV and cursing the name of grunge. Because: selling out.
