Ellery: MBFWA Interview and Gallery

Fresh-faced models and little bear ears!

We just came back from Ellery’s show and do we even need to say it? It was freakin’ amazing. Amazeballs, if you will. The show had the best girls, who wore fresh-faces and little bear ear headbands. It also had the best clothes. We legged it backstage after the show (literally, I think I knocked maybe three people over) and spoke with designer Kym Ellery.

Ingrid Kesa: How did you choose the music for the show?
Kym Ellery: Oh, I worked with Graz. He’s one of my bestest friends. He and I do sunglasses together. I just trust him 100% and obviously Mark Vassallo Creative Directed the show and he had a real vision for the sound, and wanted it to be one long track and it’s so different to anything that I’ve ever done in the past.

So it was created exclusively for the show?
Yeah. Graz mixed it together and layered it up as they do and I just couldn’t believe how quickly he nailed it.

It seemed almost unexpected. It was cool. I was sitting opposite Yvan (Face Hunter) and he was kind of dancing in his seat, so that’s always good.
Oh, good!

What will you be doing this afternoon — relaxing or more work?
All my family are here, so I will definitely take them all out for a drink somewhere, as well as my team, who've all been doing all-nighters. It’s not as bad as some years, but I think the afternoon will definitely be about having a martini and chilling out.

Totally. I came backstage straight after the show had finished and you were surrounded by millions of cameras and press-people. Do you get nervous by this kind of thing?
I’ve got used to it now, it's just when your voice is tired, it's tough because you sound all [makes high-pitched noise].

Well you seem really relaxed and you look fresh-faced and everything.
I hired the best make-up artist I know to come and sort me out! "I need you!"

Another thing about your show that set it apart was that the girls were just so amazing.
I wanted it to be a little more grown-up than sexy. I think the girls are naturally so sexy. I said to Mark yesterday, "why don’t we just send them down in bare feet?" They’re so incredible; they could pull it off. To me they were all new. I've not cast in Australia for a little while, like compared to when I was at a magazine, you'd always be seeing models and now I feel so fresh coming in and knowing only two girls out of 30.

They all seemed of a really high, international standard.
Yeah, and they looked like bears, some of them. I was like, "oh my god, you look like a teddy bear!"

Yes, with the little headbands.
Yeah, the little ears.

Another thing I loved was the sparkly red pieces. How did you make them?
It’s a fine tulle that's got a polyurethane high-shine glitter on it. It looked good under the lights, we were really excited about that... It was all about the glitter.
