Sofia Coppola x Robert Mapplethorpe
The filmmaker curates the photographer's show.
Although he passed away in in 1989, the legacy of iconic image-maker Robert Mapplethorpe lives on, especially through his latest show that has been curated by Sofia Coppola. Following a collaboration between director Robert Wilson and photographer Hedi Slimane, Coppola has been invited by the Galerie Thaddeus Ropac in Paris to select her picks from Mapplethorpe's body of work in a show which opened yesterday. While Mapplethorpe is famed for his portraits of Patti Smith and sexually-taboo subjects, in this new show Coppola brings lesser-known works to the fore. Focusing on landscapes, still-lifes, and imagery of children and women, the included photographs resonate with Coppola's own dream-like and innocent aesthetic, seen in films like The Virgin Suicides and Lost In Translation.
Robert Mapplethorpe curated by Sofia Coppola will run until January 7, 2012.
