stevie dance's nyfw cheat sheet: marc jacobs

High on shine.

Rumours about Marc Jacobs' move to Dior wasn't the only sense of drama at his show this season, which opened with a theatrical spectacle. A gold curtain was drawn to reveal models centre stage, posed in Broadway-style positions to the backing track of Phillip Glass' opera Einstein On The Beach. And would we expect anything less from a man that has both a Spongebob Square Pants tattoo and 'bros before hos' inked on his forearm? No, we would not.

There was definitely a nod to the 1920's at Marc Jacobs, but it wasn't just a Great Gatsby regurgitation. Drop-waist dresses and fringed flapper frocks ripped down the runway in what was a reference to the roaring twenties but there were also club kid elements like plastic-fantastic perspex paneled cowboy boots and see-through cellophane frabrications. It was a collection high on shine, from shimmering silvers and glowing golds, to a series of garish gingham garments which were so bright they basically required shades, coloured crocodile skin and a smattering of sequins.

Famous fans of the brand such as Dakota Fanning, Sofia Coppola and Kim Gordon (who have all been involved in Marc Jacobs campaigns at some point) were seated front row. All in all, SS12 was a terrific testament to Marc Jacobs being the man of the moment.
