Wheels & Dollbaby's lookbook for SS12/13 collection 'Butterfield 8' takes lingerie-loving model Tiah Eckhardt as its leading lady. The collection borrows its name from the 1960 film starring Elizabeth Taylor, and even though the collection's inspired by classic film, it doesn't stray too far from its rock 'n' roll roots.
The new range dips into a palette of powder blue, classic black and leopard print, with occasional splashes of pink. Think one foot in Paris and one in the wild West, where leather is mixed with lace. If the line is anything like the Wheels & Dollbaby we've come to know, it'll instantly sexify anyone who dares to brave its slinky silhouettes.
We spoke with founder/designer Melanie Greensmith about her muse de choix for the collection and the difference between 'sexy' and 'pretty'.
Ingrid Kesa: What is it about Tiah — why do you like working with her so much? How does she personify the Wheels & Dollbaby girl?
Melanie Greensmith: Well, firstly she's great fun and a very bright girl who just totally gets me. She has the wonderful balance I like between sexy, classic and innocent. She's got amazingly long, super-feline limbs which make her super hot. Some of my favourite shoots we've done together have been the first [ones] with Justin Smith... They were used all over the world, even in Vogue Paris dare I say!
Can you tell us a little bit about this collection?
Elizabeth Taylor is the inspiration, in particular [for her role in] the film Butterfield 8. The opening scene is in this most glamorous 50s French/Hollywood apartment and it is my dream home! She's so 'devil may care' in it, yet so vulnerable. Blue is my favourite colour and this is through the whole collection, even baby blue leather jackets — so cute!
What's your favourite piece from the collection?
The 'Uptown Girl' dress. The shoulder line is so sexy, it looks great on your arms. I have already pinched one from the sample rack!
Who is the sexiest woman of all time?
Brigitte Bardot, for her impish kitten-ness, Ava Gardner for her strong and wild beauty, Marilyn Monroe for her innocence, Carine Roitfeld... There are many. 'Sexy' is a wonderful thing, as it doesn't age like 'pretty' right?
