Weekend Review — Beyoncé Saves the World, Terry Richardson x Nasty Gal, New Pussy Riot, Jack Kerouac's Cover & More
A roundup of news you missed on the weekend due to having too much fun.
We understand that weekends are a sacred 72 hours of shutting off from society, exercising your drunk-dialing skills and taking Instagram photos of your brunch. That's why we're going to do a roundup of what happened over the weekend, just in case you missed it.
First up, Beyoncé saved the world, proving that she is actually Jesus. She fronted the United Nations' World Humanitarian Day campaign, a social media project which aimed to reach 1 billion people in a single day and encourage them to do good shit for the world and stuff. "This is our time to leave our mark on the world and show that we were here and we care," Beyoncé said. She also released the video for 'I Was Here', filmed last week at the UN in New York, to celebrate the whole shebang. If you don't get goosebumps you have no soul.
Terry Richardson, who must still be on a high after receiving a B12 injection from Miranda Kerr, shot the latest lookbook for the crazy-popular Nasty Gal, who have just started their own in-house label (below). In other news related to your diminishing bank balance, Net-A-Porter has a new shoppable lookbook which displays current and yet-to-arrive product, making it even easier to spend hours wistfully wanting all of the fashion.
Speaking of fashion, August 19 would have been Coco Chanel's birthday, so you should probably smoke a cigarette while wearing pearls in her honour (if you haven't already). Bill Cunningham (who is the best) made a video to commemorate the life and legacy of Anna Piaggi, describing her as "probably the brightest, most creative woman in fashion" and "the sweetest, nicest person", as well as providing personal anecdotes.
Blog Good Is Dead unearthed a cover that Jack Kerouac himself drew for his classic On The Road (above), currently on the radar due to its upcoming filmic adaptation. The cover was never considered for use by the publishers, but in a note he wrote, "I submit this as my idea of an appealing commercial cover expressive of the book. The cover for The Town and the City was as dull as the title and the photo backflap."
Pussy Riot, three members of which have been jailed in Russia for "hooliganism motivated by religious hatred", have put out their latest single 'Putin Lights Up the Fires'. Last week saw global protests to free the riot grrrl band's members, and now Paul McCartney has stepped for in support. He wrote on Twitter, "I hope you can stay strong and believe that I and many others like me who believe in free speech will do everything in our power to support you and your artistic freedom." Alicia Silverstone also wrote to President Putin to request vegan meals in jail for (vegan) member Maria Alekhina.
Finally, Lego — who we feature in our 100th issue (our Deputy Editor spent 15 hours and 37 minutes building the most challenging lego of all time, the Death Star II) — turned 80.
