Yayoi Kusama x Louis Vuitton Lookbook

The collaboration will be released this week ahead of her retrospective at the Whitney, NY.

Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama is the only person in the universe who can say that she's lived in a mental hospital by choice for almost forty years AND collaborated with Louis Vuitton. It was announced earlier this year that the Japanese avant-garde artist would be teaming up with the French luxury house to produce a spot-covered capsule collection, and now we can finally get out hands on the clothing, accessories, leathergoods and watches.

"Marc Jacobs's sincere attitude towards art is the same as my own. I respect him as a wonderful designer. Louis Vuitton understands and appreciates the nature of my art. Therefore there isn’t much difference from my process of making fashion," Yayoi told The Cut of the collaboration.

This isn't the 83-year-old artist's first foray into fashion, though. In the late 60s, when living in New York and hanging out with Andy Warhol et al, Yayoi established her own label, the Kusama Fashion Company, and even had a corner in Bloomingdales dedicated to her wild designs. Wild designs included translucent dresses, sleeping bag dresses for couples, an evening gown with cut-outs on the breasts and butt, and a Homo Dress, with a more than slightly suggestive hole at the behind. Last year, she also worked with Lancôme on the artwork for some limited-edition lipglosses.

Ahead of her retrospective, which opens at the Whitney later this week, the Louis Vuitton x Yayoi Kusama collaboration will be available in the US at Louis Vuitton's Fifth Avenue Masion in New York, as well as a pop-up concept store in Soho from this Wednesday onwards. Expect more Louis Vuitton x Yayoi Kusama pop-up shops to appear over the next few months in Hong Kong, Tokyo, Singapore, London and Paris.
