Cardi B Hits #1, Is The First Solo Female Rapper To Do It Since 1998

Not only did Cardi B win NYFW, but she also won #1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 with ‘Bodak Yellow’ — and not 24 hours later she went platinum. This is great news. We need more of this. On the downer, it’s the first time a lady rapper has been at the top, with no features, since Lauryn Hill’s ‘Doo-Wop (That Thing)’ in 1998. 1998!!

In fact, only three other female rappers have hit that spot… ever. And they’ve all been with features: Lil’ Kim, Mya, Christina and P!nk for ‘Lady Marmalade’, Shawnna and Ludacris for ‘Stand Up’ and Iggy Azalea and Charli XCX for ‘Fancy’. Ugh.
