Honestly the idea of Barack and Michelle commissioning some stuffy portraits to be hung at the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery was never one that crossed our minds. But we still can’t help but be entirely gleeful upon the reveal of each of their likeness.
Smack bang in the middle of Black History Month, the paintings have been revealed and they’re absolutely by two black artists. Kehinde Wiley was tasked with painting Barack — who joked about trying to negotiate less greys and less ear. Amy Sherald painted Michelle’s portrait, and Barrack thanked her for capturing his wife’s “hotness” like the true bae he is.
